Strata + Hadoop 2016 … Digital transformation, big data and Hadoop!

– September 29, 2016 – 0 Comments

There is no better venue than Strata + Hadoop 2016 to talk about digital transformation, big data and Hadoop.

Let me start with the Internet of Everything which represents a global market transition driven by a surge in connections among people, processes, data and things. The Internet of Things is focused on devices, but when you connect the unconnected, the Internet of Things becomes the Internet of Everything. It’s important to understand when you bring something online it’s not just connected to the Internet – it is connected to everything else. As these connections multiply, the result is exponential change, creating new revenue streams, better customer and social experiences, and new operational models that deliver ever-greater efficiency and value. By 2020,

  • world population will increase from 7.45 billion to 7.58 billion
  • those who have internet access will increase from 3.61 billion to 5.0 billion
  • number of connected devices will increase from 15 billion to 50 billion
  • global mobile IP traffic will increase from 50 exabytes to over 350 exabytes
  • the digital universe will grow from 15 zettabytes to 40 zettabytes

An example … Consider the Olympics, the largest sporting event in the world. The 31st Summer Olympics were recently held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Thousands of athletes from more than two hundred nations participated and five billion people watched the games, that’s more than two-thirds of the world’s population, and a forty percent increase from 2012 London Olympics. Cisco partnered with NBC to provide the experience. It was the most connected event in history. The network provided by Cisco had over 100,000 ports and 5,000 WiFi access points connecting 15,000 athletes, 8,000 rooms at the Olympic Village alone, 25,000 media personnel, 70,000 volunteers, 85,000 law enforcement personnel, and over 3,000 officials on the ground behind the scenes. Do you see the exponential increase in the number of connections? During the games 54 million competition data feeds were transported and processed in real-time. Over 23 million network attacks were detected and blocked. 170,000 hours of online video content was uploaded, that’s almost 20 years of continuous video watching. 130 million hours of online video were watched via mobile devices – the world is definitely going mobile. See the magnitude of the challenges and opportunities? The technology we implemented and the lessons we learned have broad applications to the world at large with digital transformation.

Challenges … This digital transformation is a disruption and it threatens organizations, public sector and private sector alike, it is a reality that cannot be ignored. As with all change, there is tremendous opportunity to create new value. Organizations that meet the challenge will drive their own disruption, but only if they fully embrace digital business transformation. Gartner estimates that by 2020, seventy five percent of businesses will be digital, or have digital business transformations underway. However, only thirty percent of those efforts will be successful, owing in part to a lack of specialized talent and technical expertise. All of this requires a fundamental rethinking of business and operational strategies as organizations adopt new models for agile information technology, edge analytics and platform-based security.

A digitally transformed organization is hyper-aware, predictive and agile – with dynamic processes enabling it to adapt and thrive in an environment of continual change. One of the primary drivers of digital transformation is sophisticated analytics with big data technologies. Big data is the engine that drives today’s analytics. But, note that big bata has evolved to meet this need. It was originally focused on batch processing of offline data; now, it is the primary enabler of analytic engines running on streaming data in real-time. With digital transformation, data becomes the most valuable asset – you could even call it the lifeblood of the organization. Another important point to note is that these emerging analytics are not likely to replace traditional analytics but they coexist with and complement each other. Data from connected things: sensors, smart devices, mobile phones, connected automobiles and social networking, will be combined with traditional business transactional data and then analyzed in real-time. Collecting more data, and preparing for increasing growth in data, will be more critical than ever before.

So what is Cisco doing at Strata + Hadoop – a big data conference? … (This was one of the top questions that we heard at the early Strata conferences. Not anymore, but let me address it once again). The answer is simple: Cisco is not just a leader in networking. In just a short span of seven years, Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) has grown into one of the top server platforms in the world adopted by over 52,000 unique customers. With digitization, all the data will require two fundamental aspects: transport and processing. Cisco’s long-time expertise is in networking and we are all over the transport problem, but we have done so much more. Cisco UCS is a fully integrated infrastructure bringing together computing, storage and networking to create one of the best performing systems in the world, demonstrated through more than 100 industry standard benchmark records, including several big data benchmark records.

Here are the top ten reasons for you to visit the Cisco booth at Strata + Hadoop 2016 by Rex Backman.

Our Solution Offers .. We introduced our big data solutions four years ago and have seen wide adoption across major industry verticals and have been endorsed by leading analysts like IDC and Forrester Research.

Big data systems have a lot of moving parts and a key differentiator for Cisco is the partnerships we have formed with leading big data software vendors. One of the reasons for our success: we made the complex architectures easy for our customers to implement by working closely with our partners using our validated designs and end-to-end automation tools.

forresterThese Cisco Validated Designs (CVD) employ a fully integrated infrastructure that can scale as business demands using a simplified centralized management approach allowing one to see the whole infrastructure as a single unit, dramatically reducing the complexity of provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting and growing the system.

While our portfolio is much broader, let me describe our Hadoop solutions at a high level:

  • Data Lake and Data Hub – Hadoop has emerged as an integral part of enterprise data management driven by the cost of ownership and scalability advantages. We have created an array of Cisco Validated Designs with leading Hadoop software partners.  These solutions have evolved inline with the advancement in the Hadoop ecosystem technologies such as support for tiered storage, SQL compliance, advanced automation and many more.
  • End-to-End Analytics – Internet of Things devices such as sensors, smart devices, mobile phones, social networking, and online transactions are all generating data at unprecedented scale. All of this data needs to be captured, monitored and processed in real-time. We’re seeing this with systems that provide sentiment and exploratory analytics, as well as edge nodes issuing real-time alerts, often as part of a larger framework known as the Lambda Architecture. Our vision of the evolution of the Lambda Architecture combines both historical data, in Hadoop or traditional relational systems, and real-time streaming data under an end-to-end unified management plane.
  • Big Data meets Traditional – Hadoop and other big data technologies are not necessarily replacing traditional technologies but coexisting and complementing each other by the integration of traditional analytics with emerging datasets built on big data systems. One example is SAP HANA Vora, a new in-memory query engine which leverages and extends the Apache Spark execution framework to provide enriched interactive analytics on Hadoop data. Cisco and SAP have invested in a joint initiative – project Benjamin – a platform for joint innovation, testing and customer proof of concept.
  • Industry Vertical Solutions – Big data has been adopted across all major industry verticals. We have a broad range of expertise and a partner ecosystem to work with our customers to understand their businesses, challenges and opportunities, and to identify big data solutions appropriate to their needs. Some of the areas of focus include: finance, healthcare, media, manufacturing, retail, energy and utilities. Stay tuned.

Cisco is your partner in this journey towards a digital transformation. We can help you navigate through the disruption you’re experiencing, by enabling you to be hyper-aware, predictive and agile in your operations, significantly reducing your time-to-value as you move from data to insights.

NYC2

In honor of David Letterman… we hope we did him proud:

10 –       Come Fly the Friendly Skies of Cisco.
Hey, we are raffling off a drone end of day on Wednesday and Thursday. These are not just any old white box drones. These are custom Cisco branded drones. It’s a super limited edition, too. Like there are two in the whole world. Come on by the booth and register. Winner need not be present.

9 –         Have a drink on us (Wednesday night).
Once again Cisco is one of the Strata+Hadoop Data After Dark sponsors. This is the social event of the show. This year it is being held on the USS Interpid. Stop by. Mingle. Drink. Mingle some more.

8 –         Our SWAG is better than your SWAG.
I know this is a relative claim. All the booths in the Expo Hall have some sort of SWAG. Cisco’s though is pretty good I think… shoot on by the booth get registered and get a cool hat. Sit in on and hear our SMEs (aka Subject Matter Experts) wax on about cool stuff and get a free book. Then yes, there is the drone give away.

7 –         Our 5-minute keynote has some serious speed.
Thursday morning Cisco Marketing Leader Todd Brannon (doing Yeoman work filling in at the last moment for Cisco CTO Raghu Nambiar) does the equivalent of “Speed Dating Presentations” in a 5 minute pitch that highlights some very, very cool Big Data and Analytics use cases. Some industry and world firsts here folks.

Cisco Congratulates NBASE-T Alliance on Approval of a New Industry Standard.

– September 27, 2016 – 2 Comments

As a founding member of the NBASE-T Alliance℠, Cisco is proud to celebrate IEEE’s approval of IEEE 802.3bzTM (2.5G/5G BASE-T) as a new Ethernet standard. From the start we saw the issue, understood the opportunity and realized the value to customers. Some of our most talented engineers are investing their time and energy in the alliance. Today, Cisco engineers such as Peter Jones hold key leadership positions within the Alliance. We have been a driving force behind the industry momentum that has led to IEEE ratification in less than two years.

And we’re not just committed to the concept, we’re committed to driving adoption. Over these last two years we have shown our leadership by introducing the industry’s first NBASE-T technology in our Cisco Catalyst Portfolio and we continue to expand our support in across our enterprise networking and Meraki solutions. (Want more details? Expanding Your Network, Creating More Bandwidth, NBASE-T and Wave 2 Just Make Sense, Multigigabit and Wave 2 Wi-Fi )

More and More. Faster and Faster.
InstalledOutlets
As new 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless technology is being deployed the need to offload more and more data at higher and higher speeds from the wireless to the wired network has never been so critical.

Going beyond 1 Gb/s with existing Cat5e and Cat6 cables was little more than a talking point two years ago. But now with NBASE-T, we have the ability to extend the life of an enormous asset —your wired network. The Cat5e and Cat6 installed in just the last 15 years now exceeds an estimated 70 billion meters of cabling, which is more than 10 trips to Pluto.

Costly. Painful. Sometimes just not doable.
For some, a re-cabling isn’t even possible. For others, unfeasible.  For the rest, re-cabling is just costly and disruptive.  It is easy to imagine the value of delivering multi-gigabit speeds to the more than 1.3 billion Cat 5e/6 outlets worldwide if it doesn’t require the huge head-ache and expense of a major cable replacement. The promise of NBASE-T has to have nearly every CFO, CTO, building manager and IT group breathing a huge sigh of relief.

wreckingSolving the Problem – upgrade a switch
Taking lessons learned from a now mature 10GBASE-T technology, NBASE-T uses a type of signaling that boosts data throughput over twisted pair copper cable and takes us beyond previous limitations (up to 100 meters of Cat 5e/6).  So by upgrading the networking equipment, you can dramatically boost your network performance whether it’s an enterprise, service provider or home network.

I’m very proud of what we have achieved as a team. It’s not often you get a chance to contribute to something that can move the entire industry.

  1. Great work on the speed improvements. However for clarification, Pluto is 7.5 billion kilometers away. If 70 billion meters of Cat5e/Cat6e have been installed, although still impressive, it is less than 1/100 of the distance to Pluto, not 10 trips.

The Router That Speaks

– September 23, 2016 – 0 Comments

Have you ever imagined what your car, phone, laptop, or anything you own for that matter, would say if it could speak? I think my phone would tell me to stop dropping it.  My car would beg me to get it washed.

What if the routers that have been powering your branch network all these years could talk?  What if they could talk to each other?  Something like this might happen:

In order for your organization to move faster, more efficiently, and more securely, your network needs to transform.  And since the branch is where 80% of your employees and customers are served, the branch needs a solid network foundation.

The Cisco ISR 4000 Series is built on the Cisco Digital Network Architecture its features deliver the network requirements for the digital organization.

  • Insights and Experiences: Visibility and real-time analytics to ensure application experience
  • Automation and Assurance: Automated provisioning for faster SD-WAN deployments
  • Security and Compliance: Industry-leading threat defense and secure WAN
  • Virtualization: Simplified operations and deployment of virtual network services

So what should you do?  Read this guide on how the ISR 4000 series stacks up against its predecessor.  Use the Router Selector to help you choose the right router for your branch or store – whether you are acquiring a new router or upgrading an old one.

Please do let me know what your router says the next time you see him (or her).

Viva Las Vegas: Doubling down on Data Center Solutions at SAP TechEd

– September 21, 2016 – 0 Comments

They go by names like Blackbeard & Basis-Pro. They’re the best of the best. The top of the SAP cognoscenti food chain. The SAP Mentors, an elite group of gurus from customers, consultants, and SAP. They’re in their element here, prowling #SAPTechEd for the sTechEd 2016lickest, tastiest new technologies, judging who has the stuff to impress.

And Cisco Data Center does not disappoint.   Last week I previewed two solutions we’re unveiling here in Vegas: Software Defined Storage and Tetration Analytics. However the city of bright lights is no place for the meek. So Cisco doubled down with two more hot new solutions to share with this august SAP TechEd audience:

  • First we introduced Software Defined Storage, a flexible, re-deployable approach to integrated storage, designed to protect your investment and expand your SAP data center infrastructure options.

  • Then we previewed Tetration, a DVR for your data center, allowing a level of pervasive network visibility and analytics heretofore unimagined and unavailable.  Featured in our booth and presented in half a dozen sessions, the interest here has been tremendous.

  • But we’re not done! This week at TechEd we are unveiling our new IoT Foundation Solution for SAP, which provides end-to-end IoT Analytics for SAP, quickly collecting, processing, and analyzing massive amounts of data to gain better insights in less time.

  • And finally, Cisco and SAP are partnering with Deloitte on their S/4 accelerator methodology. Deloitte’s slick new deployment offer leverages our SAP-certified Benjamin architecture, which includes Cisco ACI policy-based provisioning, to provide
    one-click deployment of S/4.

Was it enough?  Will the #SAPMentors be impressed?   We hope so.  But in the meantime, we know our innovations around SAP infrastructure are attracting a lot of attention here in Vegas; Day 1 set a record for number of visitors to the Cisco booth!

The solutions we’re driving have struck a cord with the engineers with whom we spoke, most of whom telling us that Cisco is addressing the issues that are top of mind: Enhanced Security & Governance, Efficient Provisioning and Automation, Superior Management and Platform Flexibility.

If you missed us at SAP TechEd, or are interested in hearing more about how Cisco can improve your SAP data center, please visit our website or talk to your Cisco rep. Or better yet, ask an SAP Mentor!

Cisco ACI Ecosystem Builds Strong Momentum with new Security, Monitoring and Orchestration Technology Partners

– September 20, 2016 – 0 Comments

When it comes to leadership in the SDN marketplace, clearly there is one winner. And that is, Cisco ACI. The proof is in customer momentum numbers. In the recently concluded quarter, Cisco ACI announced 8600 plus ACI ready customers and a rapidly growing ecosystem of 50 plus technology partners.

In fact, the growing ecosystem of partners is a direct testimony to the openness of the ACI platform. I like specifics. In recent blogs, I presented the customer success featuring ACI with F5 and ACI with Citrix, and it was clear how customers are benefiting from these solutions. In this blog, I want to highlight recent North-bound technology partner solution integrations with ACI, the use-cases they address and the key benefits to customers.

In this blog, I will focus on Splunk, Zenoss, AlgoSec, Tufin, Sciencelogic and One Convergence. What is unique about these partners? Well, they all use the Cisco ACI’s REST API to integrate with Cisco ACI and are also referred to as North-bound partners.

Screen Shot 2016-09-20 at 9.35.22 AM

Splunk Enterprise (Analytics) – Cisco ACI for Splunk Enterprise offers a flexible approach to monitoring Cisco ACI and all other elements of customer’s technology stack. ACI and Splunk together reduce customer costa and accelerate MTTR, meet SLAs and improve the efficiency through realtime and historical insights into ACI health, user and fabric analytics and single console visibility across physical and virtual infrastructure. For details read solutions brief and visit splunkbase.

Zenoss Service Dynamics 5 (System Management) – Zenoss, a systems management software company, focuses on the challenges of helping ensure the delivery and operation of large-scale IT services. Zenoss Service Dynamics 5 replaces a patchwork of traditional management frameworks and custom-built solutions, bringing highly scalable, unified monitoring and operations management to Cisco ACI. This powerful combination is well suited to a new class of IT demands, including IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS), automated operations, and hybrid cloud infrastructure. For more information, click here

Tufin orchestration Suite (Security and Application connectivity) – The integration of Tufin Orchestration Suite with Cisco ACI provides visibility, compliance, and automated provisioning of security policies across ACI fabric, firewalls and cloud platforms. ScienceLogic (Monitoring) – Cisco ACI is great for reducing the amount of heavy lifting network engineers have to do to get a network up and running. Gone are the days of manually establishing Access Control Lists (ACLs) — all of those activities are automatically handled by ACI behind the scenes. ScienceLogic’s hybrid IT monitoring platform automatically discovers all of the elements making up your Cisco ACI system. It maps your ACI components onto visual topology views, applies best practice monitoring templates, and populates a number of out-of-the-box dashboards.

Why should customers care for this? Well, for starters, the joint solution ensures network performance, by spotting bottlenecks before end-users notice them. It also helps reduce downtime – If an application is performing poorly or has spotty availability, IT personnel can quickly diagnose whether the issue is with the application, virtual machine, hypervisor, or ACI network element — using intuitive, graphical maps. One Convergence (Network Service delivery) – One Convergence – Cisco ACI solution provides high level of automation of all layers of the networking stack and enables enterprises and service providers to roll out rich set of network services at scale in OpenStack cloud deployments. The solution addresses the scale and efficiency required by large Data Centers. ACI/APIC in combination with NSD provides the scale and assurance required by enterprises for all layers of networking. While ACI/APIC hardware fabric provides scale and assurance for L2 networking, the distributed routing and NAT capabilities along with distributed OPFLEX control plane of the software scales L3 networking. NSD further provides the scale and assurance for network services with per tenant network service model, elastic scalability and high availability. Need Additional information, click here

The momentum is going strong with ACI ecosystem, and several new technology partners are in the process of coming on board. I will highlight these new partners and their differentiated solutions via a new blog in near future. We have lots of exciting ACI ecosystem sessions at Microsoft Ignite during sept 26-30, Atlanta. If you happen to attend, please come by the Cisco mini theater to find details. I can go on and on, but I will then exceed the limits of a blog. I want to recommend a few useful links for you to check out.
